History of Plaid: Plaid also known as Tartan, and is a pattern consisting of criss-crossed horizontal and vertical bands in multiple colors. Tartans originated in woven wool, but now they are made in many other materials. Tartan is particularly associated with Scotland (kilts almost always have tartan patterns). Tartan has been around since at least the 1700's, so it isn't anything 'new' to the 21st century.
